5th International Edible Books High/Low Tea
April 4, 2004

The Los Angeles Book Arts Center hosted the 5th International Edible Book High/Low Tea on Saturday, April 4, 2004 at Plummer Park in West Hollywood. Seventeen absurdly creative people submitted their culinary creations for the viewing and dining pleasure of more than 150 avid book, art and food lovers. The youngest entrant, five-year-old Kate Deutsch, turned in a chocolate bowl filled with chocolate letters entitled "Kate's Dictionary, AKA Alphabet Soup." From phyllo to nori, pasta to peanut butter, the edible books ntertained and amused. Among the more unusual entries was what can only be described as edible book performance art. Artists David Burns & Matias Viegener provided the ingredients and dry ice for each guest to make their own custom ice cream in plastic bags.

The tea was enriched with offerings from Jane Lockhart of Sweet Lady Jane, Pam Morton of Morton's, Susan Onodera of Champagne Bakery & Cafe, and the wonderful people at the local Trader Joe's and Starbucks. We thank them all for their generosity.

Thanks also to the City of West Hollywood, Roz Helfland in particular, for the space at Plummer Park and their enthusiasm for this event. To Elisa Goodman for pounding the pavement soliciting donations. To Elaine and Warren Deutsch for making all the pickups and helping to set up. To all the LABAC members and guests who pitched in to make this event possible. LABAC is particularly grateful to Danny Krause and Vicki Bates, our publicists, for working so hard on our behalf just for the joy of it.

We all had a truly wonderful time and are already planning for next year's fete. Start concocting your books now!
